I love to learn about cities, art and food. I document some of that here.

I’ve been published in Madame Fiagaro, Agence-France PresseSan Francisco Bay Guardian, Giant Robot Magazine, LA Alternative Press and the Los Angeles Times, where I wrote about art and held a column called ‘The Gastro Economist,’ seeking out interesting food in Los Angeles.

Having spent most of life in California, I quit my job at the Times and moved to France to learn as much as I could. I lived and worked on farms in the Rhone, Midi-Pyrénées, and Aquitaine to meet country folk, improve my French, learn new cooking techniques, and make things like charcuterie and cheese. I also worked on a biodynamic farm and hollered French commands to donkeys as they tilled the soil. I left farm life for Paris for the next year and a half, writing copy, leading Julia Child-themed food tours, and prepping meals for a pop-up restaurant in a 12eme apartment.

I finally ended up in London to make Mexican cheese in Peckham and helped start up a food hub in Holloway. That was the end of my European getaway and now I’m back in L.A.

I’m currently the assistant editor at KCET Living where I write and edit stories about food, travel, and the outdoors.

    Hi Cynthia!
Do you remember me from our long flight back to LA from Amsterdam? I’m so happy you made it to France! How’s the experience treating you? You have a great blog and I’m living vicariously through you 🙂 We moved back to LA from Oslo and while I miss the free time to cook, it’s been really nice to have great food so easily accessible again. Write if you have a chance.
    Kim

I’ve never even had your mom’s Chinese soups, but now I’m craving them too!

Hi Cynthia, I was at Andi and Erica’s happy hour last week. I just found your blog through Tom’s Paris Insights blog. I’m from OC (not LA, but close) and lived in SF for 10 years, before moving to Paris in late 2005. I’m so sorry I didn’t have the chance to meet you as it sounds like we have some things in common. Hopefully, next time! I love your blog and all the wonderful food photos.
